Since music, like language, has its own rules, a knowledge of musical 'grammar' is fundamental to a convincing interpretation. The author looks at all the aspects which must be taken into consideration when shaping the melodic line (rhythm, metre, rubato, notated phrasing, the musical phrase, ornamentation, hidden polyphony etc.). Illustrating his points with numerous examples taken from the flute repertoire from 17th to the 20th centuries, he deduces 'rules' for interpretation - rules which are not intended to be dogmatic, but which should stimulate performers to form their own opinion.
