    • Der um 1100 geborene Albrecht der Bär ist vor allem als Gründer der Mark Brandenburg sowie als Stammvater des Geschlechts der Askanier in die Geschichte eingegangen. Bis zu seinem Tod 1170 trug er die Titel Graf von Ballenstedt, Graf von Aschersleben und Graf von Weimar-Orlamünde. Er wirkte zeitweise als Markgraf der Lausitz, als Markgraf der Nordmark und einige Jahre sogar als Herzog von Sachsen. Da der sächsische Adel sich der Verleihung der Herzogswürde durch König Konrad III. widersetzte, musste Albrecht 1142 zugunsten Heinrichs des Löwen auf Sachsen verzichten. Die vorliegende Biographie Albrechts des Bären beschreibt sein Leben und Wirken auf der Grundlage aller zur Verfügung stehenden Quellen. Sie zeichnet das Bild einer bewegten Epoche mittelalterlicher Geschichte, in der die Grundlagen jener territorialen Ordnung gelegt wurden, aus der ab 1701 das Königreich Preußen entstand. Wegen des großen Erfolges erscheint das Buch nun in zweiter Auflage. Es wurde vom Autor durchgesehen und um ein Ortsregister ergänzt; Born around 1100, Albert the Bear is best known as the founder of the Mark Brandenburg and as the progenitor of the House of Ascania. Until his death in 1170, he bore the titles Count of Ballenstedt, Count of Aschersleben and Count of Weimar-Orlamünde. He was at times Margrave of Lusatia, Margrave of the Nordmark and for a few years even Duke of Saxony. Since the Saxon nobility opposed the granting of the ducal title by King Konrad III, Albrecht had to relinquish Saxony in favour of Henry the Lion in 1142.The present biography of Albert the Bear describes his life and work on the basis of all available sources. It paints a picture of a turbulent epoch in medieval history, when the foundations were laid for the territorial order from which the Kingdom of Prussia emerged in 1701. Due to its great success, the book is now being published in a second edition. It has been revised by the author and supplemented by a place index.
